EVOLUTION IN D.R
The ferronickel industry in the Dominican Republic began to grow in the 1970s, when large nickel deposits were discovered in Bonao. Soon after, Falcondo built processing plants and started ferronickel production. The company used nickel to produce materials for stainless steel manufacturing.
During the 1980s and 1990s, the industry expanded rapidly. Exports increased, thousands of workers found jobs, and ferronickel became an important part of the Dominican economy. Companies also improved technology and bought modern equipment to increase production.
In the 2000s, the industry faced economic and environmental challenges. Some operations slowed because international nickel prices fell, but companies adapted by improving efficiency and environmental practices.
Today, the ferronickel industry has evolved into a more modern and sustainable sector. Companies continue to use advanced technology, and ferronickel production remains important for the economy of Bonao and the Dominican Republic.
